When this Havana-inspired bar/restaurant opened last year, it heralded the rise of Kiev’s underdeveloped bar scene, promising wild nights of mojitos, cigars and naughty salsa. Its graffitied walls, jazzy portraits from the bar’s Havana outpost and kick-ass cocktails did draw in the bold and beautiful denizens of the city for a while. However, it quickly turned into an after-work hangout for middle-level managers and their middling entourage. The reasons can be chalked up to many things, including the too-early 11 pm closing (in a 24 hour city like Kiev!), cheap bar stools in the main room that gave it a cafeteria feel, and a boisterious Cuban band that played the same songs night after night. Hey, Guantanamera sung live is cool the first, but the second and the third? Still, for all that, the chicken & rice combo is delicious, and the mojitos are some of the best in Kiev.
